Club Champion | TM Baker |
Venue - Southampton Municipal
The Ordnance Survey Club Championship 2003 is played over 36 holes. It is held traditionally at the Ordnance Survey's Home Course of the Southampton Municipal and it is an event, which is usually won by the lower handicappers of the club. This year was no exception.
Weather wise the event was blessed by hot sunny conditions, which took its toll on the golfers in the latter stages. There were 30 competitors taking part this year including 3 Ordnance Survey first timers and a guest.
In the leading group were the main participants, all champions or former champions of the Ordnance Survey. This included Chris Dunn 2003 Captain and 2 time winner, Bob Bailey 9 times winner, who had only won the event at the municipal in 1983, Tony Mabey 2000 champion and the defending champion Steve Smith.
The morning round was a duel between Steve & Bob with Tony & Chris considerably off the pace. After nine holes Steve was one up on Bob with a creditable 37. With the pressure Steve was exerting Bob did not seem to be his assured self with some uncharacteristic wayward tee shots. Credit to Bob he held himself together and at lunch was two shots behind Steve who had carded an excellent 74. Darren Bailey was third with a 82.
The other Competition of the day is the T M Baker Trophy. This is the best net score over 36 holes. At the half way stage Rick Hunt playing off 20 was leading with a net 63, Steve Smith second with a net 66 and equal third with a net 69 Darren Bailey and Steffan Wells.
The 1st Hole on the second round began disastrously for Bob when he uncharacteristically shanked his iron and lost his ball in the hedge to the right of the 1st. Bob scored a 5 on this hole to Steve's 3 giving Steve a lead of 4 shots. Bob clawed a stroke back on the 2nd and then proceed to step up a gear with back to back birdies on the 3rd and 4th . Now it was Steve under pressure and he responded magnificently on the 6th with a birdie to tie the scores once again. At the turn Bob was one stroke up. On the Back nine Steve's challenge to defend his title withered, and with Bob maintaining his good form covering the last nine holes in 34 shots. Unfortunately this was too much for gallant Steve who trailed Bob by 11 shots at the End. With a 36 hole gross of 145 Bob Bailey became the 10 times winner of the Ordnance Survey Club Championship , Steve Smith was second with 156, Chris Dunn was third with 163 and Tony Mabey 4th with 166. In the gross competition the notable round of PM was Chris Dunn's Gross 74 who jumped from 9th to 3rd after the morning round.
In the TM Baker the trophy went to Rick Hunt who carded a net 65 in the afternoon for a total of 128. Second place went to Alan Bush on 137, third to Doug Johnson with a 137 and fourth was Bob Bailey with 139.
The day will be remembered for the good weather, an awesome display by Bob
Bailey, a gallant defence of his title by Steve Smith and two excellent rounds
by Rick Hunt. Mr Bevan will be inspecting Rick Hunt's Card for handicap reduction.
